A new decade, new semester and new opportunities! 2020 has arrived and with it, the winter term is quickly underway. At Carleton, we’re all about finding your student’s own pathway while they’re here, so no matter what their goals are we’ve got the support to help them succeed. We offer over 175 supports and services to help your student reach their academic, finance, employment, campus life and wellness goals.

Encourage Your Student to Participate in Winter Orientation

If your student is new to Carleton University in 2020, their first step in making a smooth transition is attending Winter Orientation. This free program is designed to introduce students beginning their studies in the winter term to the campus and university services, provide them with the opportunity to meet new people and help them prepare for the start of their academic career.

The next Winter Orientation session is on Friday, January 10, 2020, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. If your student is interested in attending this session, encourage them to visit the registration page.

Help Your Student Get a Head Start with I-Start: International Student Orientation

New international students at Carleton University are encouraged to check out I-Start. The I-Start orientation session will help provide your student with important information for their transition to student life in Canada. Participants will learn more about the International Student Services Office (ISSO), tips for navigating Carleton University and Ottawa, the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) and immigration information.

This orientation has been designed to meet the needs of all international students, including undergraduate, graduate, exchange and study abroad students. For more information such as session dates, please tell your student to visit the I-Start page and to register visit the ISSO, 128 University Centre, or the ISSO website.

Deferred and April Final Examination Schedules

If your student chose to defer their fall term examinations, deferred examinations will be held from Friday, January 17 to Sunday, January 19 and Friday, January 24 to Sunday, January 26, 2020. The schedule for fall term deferred final examinations will be available by Friday, January 10, 2020.

The winter term (April) final examination schedule will be posted online by the end of business on Friday, February 14, 2020. Your student will be able to find the schedule on the Examinations website, in the Carleton Mobile app and in Carleton Central, accessible through the MyCarletonPortal.

Is Your Student Thinking about Changing Their Program

Does your student want to add a concentration or minor to their degree? Perhaps they want to try another major altogether? Your student can make many of these changes online through the Change of Program Elements feature. If they plan to change their degree program, your student needs to submit an application for internal transfer.

Students interested in making changes to their program should be encouraged to check with either the Academic Advising Centre (AAC) or with the academic department responsible for the program to ensure that they are eligible to make the change they are requesting.

Grab Your Capital Hoops Tickets

The annual basketball rivalry comes to TD Place for the first time this year! Carleton and uOttawa will square off in the Capital Hoops Classic on Friday, February 7, 2020. Tickets are available now on the TD Place website.

Student tickets are now available on campus at Rodney’s House in Alumni Hall, Residence Commons and the Student Experience Office in 430 Tory Building.

Ride for Less Tickets for February Reading Week

Ride for Less is a program for students offered by the Campus Activity Board that provides buses from Carleton University to Toronto for Reading Week. Students can purchase tickets which are $35 each way, $70 for a round trip. This year, buses will depart Carleton University on Saturday, February 15 and depart Toronto on Sunday, February 23, 2020.

If your student is interested, they can purchase tickets from the Student Experience Office (SEO) located in 430 Tory Building starting on Monday, January 13, 2020. Please inform your student to purchase their tickets early as they tend to sellout quickly. For more information on the program including the bus departure and drop off locations, please encourage your student to visit the SEO website.

Free 24/7 Empower Me Counselling Services

If your student is feeling anxious, stressed or overwhelmed there is always someone they can talk to. Carleton University undergraduate students have access to free, confidential, 24/7 counselling services in the community through Empower Me. Empower Me support is available in person, by telephone, video-counselling or e counselling. The service allows students to connect with qualified counsellors, consultants and life coaches at their private practice in the community 24/7, 365 days per year – for free.

Is Your Student Interested in Becoming a Student Governor?

The Carleton University Board of Governors (BOG) is seeking Expressions of Interest from students to serve a one year term for the 2020/2021 Board year. The two undergraduate student and two graduate student positions are vacant. If your student is interested, they must attend a Board 101 information session on Tuesday, January 14 or Thursday, January 16, 2020, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.

If your student plans to apply, please kindly inform them that applications are currently open and that they must fill out the application form online. The deadline for submitting Expressions of Interest is Friday, January 17, 2020, at 4:00 p.m.
