As the exam season comes to a close, it’s finally time for the long-anticipated summer term to begin. Whether you’re working, taking summer courses, travelling or anything in between, it’s important to be conscious about the decisions you make during the break. If you put a little thought into using your time correctly, you’ll feel rested, recuperated and ready come the fall.
Fund Your Lifestyle
If you’re planning on working this summer and you haven’t yet found a job, it’s not too late! Searching for jobs can be a daunting task, especially in today’s competitive economy. However, as a Carleton student, you have access to a plethora of supports that can help you land a position.
Career Services provides many resources to help students through all phases of navigating the job market. From help writing resumes and cover letters to hunting for jobs and preparing for interviews, the team is prepared to help you be the strongest applicant you can be this summer.
Personally, I’ve made heavy use of the Career Services Job Board, where I’ve found many on-campus and external positions that specifically seek Carleton students. New jobs are posted all the time, so it’s a good idea to check in regularly.
Catch Up or Get Ahead
During the summer, you may have extra time to improve your academic life. If you dropped courses during the fall or winter terms, you might be able to get the credit by taking the class during the summer!
If you’re on track, however, I’ve found it useful to use the time to get ahead. If you need more elective credits, find a course that interests you and free up time during the busier seasons. If you’re leaving Ottawa for the summer or don’t have time to commute to campus, there are plenty of online and asynchronous options as well! The last day to register for early summer courses is Friday, May 9, 2025. For more academic dates and deadlines, visit the 2025-2026 academic dates webpage.
Use Your Freedom
The summer months are often the best time to do our hobbies, spend time with friends, work on our fitness and more! Take advantage of the nice weather and spend as much time outdoors as you can (you’ll be thankful for the vitamin D by wintertime).
If you’re looking for guidance, community and fun classes this summer, check out the CUFit Pass through Carleton Athletics. The spring schedule runs until Saturday, June 28, 2025, and includes popular activities like kickboxing, spin, zumba and much more.
Have a nice summer, Ravens!
