It’s almost winter break, and it’s the perfect time for students to get some much-needed rest and relaxation in preparation for the rest of the term. Regardless of how tempting it may be to spend the whole week in bed, winter break is a great time to catch up on anything that might have fallen behind during the term.

If you’re looking to gain that academic edge, find some summer work or simply take a mental health break, dedicate some time to working on your goals. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself later this term!

Bolster Your Academics

There’s no shame in seeking academic help during the break! Throughout the week, the Centre for Student Academic Support (CSAS) will continue to offer one-on-one Learning Support Sessions and Writing Consultation Sessions. If you’re looking to improve your time management, reduce procrastination and improve as an academic writer before midterms and finals, these sessions are perfect for you! Book an in-person or virtual session via mySuccess (log into Carleton360 through the Current Students website).

If you’re looking to work on your academics at your own pace, CSAS also provides online Learning and Writing Support Workshops on Brightspace. Enrol for tons of self-guided modules and workshops ranging from test and exam prep to how to balance your life and learning.

Find Summer Employment

Even though summer seems far away, there’s definitely no harm in starting the job search early. Many summer jobs on and off campus complete their hiring phase during the winter.

If you’re looking for summer work, visit the job board on mySuccess (log into Carleton360 through the Current Students website) for a variety of part-time, full-time, seasonal and internship options. You can also check out the City of Ottawa Summer Student Recruitment webpage for summer positions in the municipality. Finally, upload your resume and preferences to the Federal Student Work Experience Program to have applications automatically sent to employers at the federal level.

If you need assistance in your job search, Career Services’ Job Search Support Hub can help you find jobs, network with employers, strengthen your applications and more.

Put Yourself First

With time off from classes, winter break is a great time to regroup and check in on your mental health. As a Carleton student, you have access to plenty of wellness resources on campus.

It’s also important to prioritize your physical health. Use your extra time to learn a new exercise routine or cook a new healthy recipe! It’s also vital to enjoy some time outdoors. If you’re looking for winter activities in and around Ottawa, read these top tips on getting outside this winter.

Stay warm and enjoy your break!
