Holiday Break and January: What You Should Know

This news post is more than one year old and has been retained for archive purposes. The information below may no longer be relevant.

With the Omicron variant spreading at an unprecedented rate, all winter term classes will begin online from January 10, 2022 for the first three weeks of the winter 2022 term.

Subject to public health guidance, we anticipate in-person instruction to start Monday, January 31 for courses currently scheduled to be delivered in-person. We are continuing to monitor the rapidly evolving situation and will provide further updates in January. Read the full message from the president.

Holiday Closure and Restricted Building Access

Carleton University will be closed from Friday, December 24, 2021, through Tuesday, January 4, 2022, inclusively, and will re-open on Wednesday, January 5, 2022. Please note that offices, departments and units will respond to emails on or after Wednesday, January 5, 2022.

Beginning January 5, 2022, access to the majority of university buildings will remain limited to authorized individuals only and public access will remain restricted. Review service hours and access information for services and offices on Carleton’s COVID-19 website.

When to Expect Final Grades

Your grades for fall term courses (i.e. courses ending in December) will be available on Carleton Central sometime after the completion of your course.

Your instructors will be working hard to complete their marking over the holiday period. The majority of all grades are due on Monday, January 3, 2022, and we expect most instructors will have their grades available by that date. Marking and grade submission continues while the university is closed, but we ask for your patience. Once submitted, it will take a few days for the final grades to be approved by the Departmental Chair and the Dean of the Faculty that administers your course. More information is available in this post.

SAT/UNS Compassionate Grading

The Carleton University Senate has approved the use of flexible, compassionate grading options for undergraduate and special students in the fall 2021 and winter 2022 terms. Read more about converting a passing grade to Satisfactory (SAT) in this post.
