The Winter Term

Students may now generally feel more comfortable in university. They have a sense of what is expected of them in their courses, the experience of a term is under their belts and they have developed a familiarity with Carleton’s support systems.

As midterm and final grades have been entered, students may be disappointed if they didn’t meet the academic expectations they had set out for themselves and may need some encouragement.

Important Dates and Deadlines

  • January 11, 2021: First day of Winter term classes.
  • January 22-24, 29-31, 2021: Fall term deferred exams take place.
  • January 25, 2021: Last day to register in Winter term courses.

COVID-19 Community Update

With the continued rise in COVID-19 cases, the Ontario government has imposed a Provincewide Shutdown effective Saturday, December 26, 2020, at 12:01 a.m. This decision, made in consultation with the Chief Medical Officer of Health and other health experts, continues to impact the City of Ottawa. If your student is currently residing in Ontario, encourage them to visit the official Ontario website for more information on provincial restrictions and public safety measures.

As Carleton University prepares to welcome students back to virtual classes on January 11, members of the community asked to be mindful of the measures put in place at Carleton under the ongoing provincewide shutdown. Students living on campus should continue to stay up-to-date by reviewing the latest updates from Housing and Residence Life Services.

SAT/UNSAT Grade Designation Information

As a follow up to the message regarding the use of flexible, compassionate grading options for undergraduate students in the Fall 2020 and Winter 2021 terms, the Carleton University Senate has approved the use of Satisfactory (SAT) grading for the Winter 2021 term. Specifically, Senate has approved the optional conversion of one 0.5 credit grade to SAT for the Winter 2021 term. This would be in addition to the 0.5 credit grade available to your student in the Fall 2020 term that Senate passed in October, allowing for a maximum of 1.0 credit to be converted to SAT during the Fall-Winter 2020/21 terms.

Encourage your student to reach out to Career Services if they have any career-related inquiries. In addition to job search assistance, Career Services can also help students develop flexible career plans, explore their options if they are thinking about changing their program, review their resume and cover letter, prepare for job interviews, including conducting mock interviews, and more.

Managing Stress and Academics with FITA

University can be overwhelming. If your student has been struggling personally and academically, there is a program at Carleton that can help.

From Intention to Action (FITA) assists students in maintaining good academic standing for their degree program. Students receive support to better manage stress, incorporate better learning strategies and work towards improving their academic performance. FITA offers students weekly appointments with a personal coordinator for 12 sessions via teletherapy.
