Residence Students Engage with Community

Who said that Residence students are not willing to get to know the Ottawa community better? They do not just live in the tunnels, you know! On Saturday November 12, 2016, there was an exciting number of more than 40 residence students from Frontenac and Leeds Houses who attended the Residence Campus to Community Day.

The Residence Campus to Community Day was an opportunity that allowed Residence students to connect with the Ottawa local community through community service-learning. The students spent the afternoon with community organizations located near our campus backyard. This is a great way to learn about Ottawa’s community and social issues in today’s society.

Even with the busy month of November, the volunteers got up early to meet in Leeds House and disperse into seven volunteer groups. The students had the opportunity to learn and help out with Campus to Community partner organizations including: highJinx Ottawa. An organization that dedicates its work to help its neighbours.

Bruce House provides housing for people living with HIV and AIDS.

Matthew House provides shelter, food and refugee settlement assistance.

Fletcher Wildlife Garden creates and restores natural wildlife and landscapes in the community.

A.P.P.L.E. organization offers community members mental health education, employment opportunities, low cost recreational programs and more.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ottawa contributes to the fight against heart disease and stroke.

Abbeyfield House provides accommodation and companionship for senior citizens within the local communities.

The Residence Campus to Community Day was a success as it brought Carleton Residence students and the Ottawa community together for a day.
