Quote the Raven: Sadiya Samb
Bachelor of Commerce with a Concentration in Entrepreneurship

Sadiya Samb

The CEOx1Day program provides leadership development, career guidance and executive networking opportunities to Canada’s next generation of talent. Ambitious undergraduate students across the country underwent a rigorous selection process for the opportunity of a mentorship day with one of 27 CEOs. Finalists were chosen for their drive and dedication to developing leadership skills, commitment to making an impact in their community and readiness to learn and contribute.

Sadiya Samb, a third year in the Bachelor of Commerce program with a concentration in Entrepreneurship, was one of those finalists.

What inspired you to apply for the CEOx1Day program?

What inspired me to apply was the opportunity to connect with CEOs from different fields. It seemed like an incredible chance to learn from experienced leaders, and the idea of getting a glimpse into a CEO’s day-to-day life was really exciting to me. The diversity of industries represented also made it even more appealing.

How has your time at Carleton shaped your career plans?

My time at Carleton has been instrumental in shaping my career path, especially in the Bachelor of Commerce program. The flexibility to explore different majors before specializing in entrepreneurship helped me identify what I do and do not want to pursue. I have also taken advantage of networking events, employer events, and other career development opportunities, all of which have allowed me to learn from others in different fields, build connections, and refine my career goals.

The CEOx1Day experience included both a regional Career Development Day with other semi-finalists in the program and a mentorship day for finalists with a CEO. As a finalist, you were paired with Invest Ottawa CEO, Sonya Shorey. What can you tell us about those experiences, and what will you take away from them moving forward?

The Career Development Day was incredibly enriching. I had the chance to connect with like-minded students, learn about their personal ventures, and participate in activities like a personality test and multiple interviews. Even if I had not been selected as a finalist, the experience itself would have already made it worthwhile.

Being paired with Sonya was an absolute honour. Seeing her in action at Bayview Yards (the location for Invest Ottawa) was inspiring, and it helped me reflect on whether I could see myself as a CEO or a business owner in the future. What stood out to me the most was her authenticity and people-oriented approach. Despite her busy schedule, she remains true to herself and maintains a strong connection with her community. Her energy, creativity, and friendliness made a lasting impression on me.

If you could share with your fellow students one lesson you learned, what would it be?

The biggest lesson I learned from Sonya is the importance of being authentic and people-oriented. Building meaningful connections and putting in the hard work will always pay off in the long run. It is a powerful reminder to stay true to yourself and focus on what truly matters as you build your career.
