Curls and Coils: The Politics of Black Hair in Canada

Monday, February 23, 2026 @ 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm

  • Location: Richcraft Hall - Atrium
  • Event Type: 2025-2026-events

Black hair has long existed at the intersection of identity, culture, politics and resistance. Curls & Coils: The Politics of Black Hair in Canada invites students, staff and community members to engage in an open and meaningful conversation about the social and political realities surrounding Black hair and how these experiences shape everyday life.
This panel discussion will explore how Black hair influences experiences in schools, workplaces, media and public spaces, while also celebrating hair care as a site of creativity, community and cultural expression. Through shared stories and dialogue, panelists will reflect on themes of professionalism, self-expression, discrimination, acceptance and resilience, highlighting how hair care practices remain deeply connected to identity, dignity and belonging within Black communities.

Participants will have the opportunity to listen, reflect and engage in conversation to examine how policies, social norms and beauty standards continue to impact Black individuals across Canada, while also recognizing salons, barbershops and hair care spaces as important sites of community care and connection.

Whether you come to learn, share or simply listen – all are welcome to join this community-centred discussion.
