Update #1: Wednesday, July 24, 2024, at 10:00 a.m.

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Ottawa for late morning through evening on Wednesday, July 24, 2024.

Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, torrential rain and hail. There is also a risk of a tornado today, especially towards the Ottawa River Valley.

Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Water-related activities may be unsafe due to violent and sudden gusts of wind over bodies of water.

Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year.

When thunder roars, go indoors! Take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.

Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to continue to monitor the Current Students weather page for updates.
