Update #1: Thursday, June 20, 2024, at 2:20 p.m.

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Ottawa for the afternoon and evening of Thursday, June 20, 2024.

Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts and heavy rain.

Areas that receive multiple thunderstorms or prolonged rainfall from slow moving thunderstorms may have the potential to exceed 50 mm locally.

Rapidly rising rivers and creeks can sweep away bridges, culverts, buildings, and people. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Heavy downpours are likely to cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.

Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year.

Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.

Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to continue to monitor the Current Students weather page for updates.

The university remains open. Operations, including Convocation will run as scheduled.

Please exercise caution when traveling to and commuting on campus.
