Draft Student Mental Health Framework 2022-2026

This news post is more than one year old and has been retained for archive purposes. The information below may no longer be relevant.

Dear Members of the Carleton Community,

As previously announced, we are updating our Student Mental Health Framework (SMHF). This update is an important component of Carleton’s ongoing efforts towards striving for wellness. Refreshing our framework provides an opportunity to review our programs and services, consider new trends and best practices, and collaborate with the community to further enhance our overall approach and initiatives.

I would like to thank everyone who has provided feedback on the framework throughout the fall term, whether through one of the consultation meetings, an information and feedback session, or an online submission. As part of our commitment to a transparent process, we have posted a report outlining the feedback we received throughout the listening phase.

In accordance with the work plan, the feedback received has been carefully reviewed and we have now published a draft version of the updated SMHF. After considering the feedback we received, it was determined that the areas of focus could be streamlined and renamed to support the implementation of the enhanced framework. As a result, the previous areas of focus of Well-Being, Skills Building, and Resilience and Mental Health Awareness, Literacy, and Education were combined into one new section: Building Skills and Strengthening Resilience. Coordinated Crisis Management was embedded as an objective and a series of recommendations under the revised area of focus Campus Culture of Wellness. The updated areas of focus are interdependent of each other and reflect a more holistic and campus-wide approach to student mental health and well-being. These areas of focus include 12 objectives and 30 recommendations to be implemented over the next four years. They are:

  • Student Engagement
  • Building Skills and Strengthening Resilience
  • Coordinated Student Support Services
  • Campus Culture of Wellness

I encourage all members of the Carleton community to review the updated draft framework and to provide additional feedback and comments either on the consultation website or by email at SMHFramework@carleton.ca. Additional consultation meetings and information and feedback sessions will also be held over the next couple of weeks. Feedback on the updated draft framework will continue to be collected until March 18, 2022.

I would like to thank everyone for their participation in this very important process and look forward to continuing to work collaboratively with the entire community as we finalize the updated framework.

Sincerely,

Suzanne Blanchard
Vice-President (Students and Enrolment)
