Service Summary

The Unified Support Centre (USC) is a volunteer-based space consisting of the Food Centre, an on-campus food support and advocacy service, and Foot Patrol, a safe walk and safety-oriented service. The USC strives to offer direct, timely, and substantive support to the Carleton community. Check out their main services below, or visit the website for a comprehensive list! Links to common USC forms can also be found online.

The USC is always looking for volunteers! If you’d like to positively contribute to student services at Carleton, complete the volunteer interest form, send an email, or drop by the office!

The USC’s operational hours are:

Dedicated Food Hamper Retrieval: 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. on weekdays*

Foot Patrol Services: 6:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m., seven days a week

*Food hampers may also be retrieved during USC-Foot Patrol service hours.

Service Summary

Emergency Food Assistance Program

The USC provides food hampers to students in need, offering both a pick-up and delivery option (depending on location and personal need).

To request a food hamper, students must complete the electronic hamper request form. Students requesting a food hamper for the first time must also complete the electronic food bank intake form, as this information is required by the Ottawa Food Bank.

Students are limited to one food hamper request every two weeks. If you require additional food or financial assistance due to dire need, please email the USC or visit the office in University Centre 314.

Safe Walk: (613) 520-4066

USC-Foot Patrol offers safe walks on campus and up to an hour off campus (including public transit) seven days a week from 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. Safe walks consist of two USC-Foot Patrol volunteers walking with you to your destination. To request a safe walk, please call (613) 520-4066 or drop by the USC office in 314 University Centre during their operational hours!

If you’re uncomfortable with being accompanied by two USC volunteers in their USC-Foot Patrol uniforms, they can still help. Just ask them for a plainclothes safe walk and they’ll remove their vests and utility pack.

Walk and Talk: (613) 520-4449

The Walk and Talk line offers an alternative to the USC’s safe walk program by giving you the option to chat with a USC volunteer over the phone until you reach your destination. Give them a call at (613) 520-4449 from 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m., seven days a week!

Event Teams

The USC also offers both on and off campus event teams. For smaller on-campus events, a USC-Foot Patrol team can drop by or attend to offer safe walks to event attendees. For larger usually off-campus events, their Guardian Program event team assists students by offering support and direction to attendees while helping event organizers ensure that all individuals return home safely. To inquire about having a USC-Foot Patrol or Guardian team attend your event, please email usc@cusaonline.ca a week or more in advance of your event.

Borrow a First Aid Kit

The USC lends a variety of first aid kits to any Carleton University student or group seeking to borrow one for the duration of their event, activity, or outing. A Borrow a First Aid Kit inventory list is available on their website, and contains a list of available kits and their respective contents and dimensions. To sign out a kit, please email the USC, or give them a call during their operational hours, or drop by their office in 314 University Centre!
