Carleton University is committed to protecting the privacy of all students. To that end, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/privacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carleton University Privacy Office<\/a> encourages the implementation of the privacy provisions of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/laws\/statute\/90f31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ontario\u2019s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA)<\/a> within the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Email Communication<\/summary>\n<p>Your student\u2019s Carleton cMail email account is the university\u2019s official means of communication with your student. The university can only communicate about a student record to the affiliated cMail account, or to an email address included in a Third Party Release.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Third Party Release<\/summary>\n<p>Before any information is shared with parents or others, your student must <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/registrar\/third-party\/#sect1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">submit a Third Party Release<\/a> form through Carleton360. This electronic form allows students to&nbsp;release for multiple offices at once.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Tax Forms<\/summary>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Tuition and Education Certificate or T2202 is available to each student through Carleton Central. Students simply request a T2202 online and print out the document. The printed copy meets all requirements from Canada Revenue Agency. T2202s are not mailed out to students. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For Quebec residents, the Relev\u00e9 8 tax form requires a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/registrar\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/198\/2025\/11\/releve8-form.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one-time application form<\/a> [PDF, 43KB]. After completing the form, all subsequent forms for eligible tax years will be automatically built and available with your other tax forms in Carleton Central.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Registered Education Savings Plans<\/summary>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In order to release Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) funds, institutions require confirmation of academic standing or enrolment from the university. Students who require an official Verification of Student Status (VOSS) in order to access RESP funds, or to help obtain other financial assistance, must <a href=\"https:\/\/central.carleton.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">request their VOSS through&nbsp;Carleton Central<\/a>&nbsp;(Select \u2018Request a Transcript\/Certificate of Enrolment\/Verification of Student Status\u2019 from the main menu).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The VOSS details the student\u2019s program, university year standing (number of completed credits), enrolment status and the current academic session dates and is accepted by all RESP providers as well as by most other institutions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The year of study and current enrolment status information on your VOSS is current as of the day you placed your request. Year of study is adjusted daily as grade information becomes available and current enrolment status is updated whenever registration changes are made. Please review your VOSS to confirm the year of study and current enrolment status information is correct before submitting the form to your provider. If the delivered form contains out of date information, please resubmit the request once your student\u2019s year of study and current enrolment statuses have been updated.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Note \u2013 all VOSS requests are produced electronically and emailed directly to the student\u2019s Carleton email account within two business days of request. The Registrar\u2019s Office does not email third parties. The electronic document is official and is accepted by all RESP providers and most other institutions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Maintaining Interest-Free Status on Previous Student Loans<\/summary>\n<p>Students are generally not required to make payments on government student loans while they are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/awards\/cu-glossary\/minimum-required-course-load\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">enrolled in full-time studies<\/a>. However, students must notify their lender that they have returned to full-time study so that their loans continue in interest-free status. This can be done two ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reapply for government student assistance through their home province or territory\u2019s student financial aid program (e.g. Ontario Student Assistance Program).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complete a separate Continuation of Interest Free Status application through their home province or territory.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>In either case, the lender will be notified as part of the process.<br><br>While loans are in interest-free status, interest will not be charged and students do not need to make monthly payments.<br><br><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/awards\/contact\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Contact the&nbsp;Awards and Financial Aid Office<\/a>&nbsp;for additional information and assistance.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>The Undergraduate Calendar<\/summary>\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cuuc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Undergraduate Calendar<\/a>&nbsp;is your student\u2019s official resource for all their academic requirements for their degree or program, as well as Carleton\u2019s admission and academic rules and regulations. The calendar is also a great source of important dates and deadlines your student needs to be aware of. As parents, this will be an important resource for you as well. If your student is confused by their program requirements or about upcoming dates and deadlines, please direct them to the calendar.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-default\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Academics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While the start of the term is an exciting time, students should keep in mind classes do gain momentum quickly. If they are struggling to adjust to the new academic demands, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/online\/online-learning-orientation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Online Learning Orientation<\/a> and the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/csas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Centre for Student Academic Success<\/a>&nbsp;(CSAS) all offer support resources to help your student meet their goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The academic expectations your student is now facing may be, at first, overwhelming. Continue to support your student throughout the transition to university standards and direct them towards academic and wellness resources. Suggest visiting their professors\u2019 office hours or creating effective study groups with peers for extra support. This can be a stressful time, and ensuring a healthy lifestyle and a strong support network can help students thrive in their new environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Academic Advising Centre<\/summary>\n<p>Students can meet with an advisor at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/academicadvising\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Academic Advising Centre<\/a>&nbsp;to discuss choosing or changing degree elements, understanding their audit or to ask questions about academic rules and regulations.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Learning and Writing Support<\/summary>\n<p>At the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/csas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Centre for Student Academic Support (CSAS)<\/a>, your student is provided with evidence-informed educational programs and services that are available to support the academic success of all Carleton University students.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Online Learning Resources<\/summary>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/online\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carleton Online<\/a>&nbsp;supports students in the online learning environment by connecting them with resources to be successful in their courses and other student services.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-default\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Campus life<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your student has the opportunity to learn about themselves and from others through engaging with all that Carleton has to offer \u2013 university life takes place both in and out of the classroom. Whether they are moving into residence, off-campus housing or continuing to live at home, meeting new roommates and classmates can be both an exciting and stressful time for your student. It\u2019s important to emphasize communication so your student can learn how to live and learn through new challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your student now has access to over 150&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cusaclubs.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">clubs and societies<\/a>,&nbsp;state of the art&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/athletics.carleton.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">athletic facilities<\/a>&nbsp;and <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/career\/job-search\/job-postings-and-more\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">employment opportunities<\/a>. This type of employment tends to be more manageable in the long run. Co-operative Education combines traditional, in-class education with hands-on experience. Co-op students alternate study terms at Carleton with four, eight, 12 or 16-month work terms. It is a great opportunity for your student to get a head start on a career, develop key transferable skills and figure out what career path is best for them. As a parent or family member, being familiar with signs and symptoms of distress, and watching for significant changes in behaviour can ensure that students are connected with appropriate resources and services if needed. Carleton provides a variety of accessible resources and services to help students manage and maximize their mental health and wellness. Students answer a series of questions about how they feel and specific concerns to describe their circumstances, and the navigator provides a confidential and curated list of resources on campus and in the community based on their answers.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Find Support<\/summary>\n<p>Carleton provides a variety of interventions, from self-help to more intensive individual support, that you can choose from to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/wellness\/find-support\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">find the kind of support<\/a>&nbsp;needed to maximize and manage mental health.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Help a Friend\/Loved One<\/summary>\n<p>It can be difficult to know how to support a student when we aren\u2019t sure how to respond. Often we worry that we might make things worse by saying or doing the wrong thing. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wellness.carleton.ca\/resources\/supporting-a-friend\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Supporting a Friend resources<\/a>&nbsp;can help parents and families learn the basics of supporting a student in four steps.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Carleton Therapy Dogs<\/summary>\n<p>Sometimes students need to spend some time with a happy, friendly&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wellness.carleton.ca\/mental-health\/therapy-dogs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carleton Therapy Dog<\/a>&nbsp;to help melt their stress away. Visit Carleton\u2019s favourite furry friends on campus.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Submitting a Care Report<\/summary>\n<p>Sometimes we encounter friends, loved ones, or other students who are struggling. We make best efforts to provide direct support to these individuals as much as possible, but there are times when a referral to additional support is needed.<br><br>In the event you remain concerned about your student, you can&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/studentaffairs\/care-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">submit a care report<\/a>. This will document your concern and allow our Managers of Care and Support to follow up with you and your student. Please note that in cases where there is an imminent risk to the student (e.g. suicide risk, harm to self), you should contact&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/wellness\/emergency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">emergency services<\/a>&nbsp;immediately.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Substance Use<\/summary>\n<p>Carleton University embraces a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wellness.carleton.ca\/substance-use-health\/substance-use-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">substance use health<\/a>&nbsp;approach which suggests substance use not be considered in isolation but rather as an overall component of health and wellbeing.
