It feels like yesterday that we were all soaking in the sun, filling the picnic benches in the quad and along the river while we studied. Now, the snow has fallen, exams are almost over and, with them, so too is the fall semester. As a jam packed first semester wraps up on campus let’s take a minute, to be a bit cliché, and reflect on the Top 5 Student Events of Fall 2017.

#5 Getting Graphic with Ryan North

On Wednesday, September 13 Carleton Alumnus and Graphic Novelist Ryan North spent an evening in the MacOdrum Library discussing his writing career and participating in a Graphic Novel panel. Ryan North and the panel discussed their favourite graphic novels and spun their best case for their chosen piece while the audience was given the power of choosing the winner. This CU75 event was a great way to kick-off Throwback Week.

#4 Lisa Jakub

Lisa Jakub, of Mrs. Doubtfire and Independence Day fame, made a visit to campus on October 19. The former actor wasn’t in town to promote a new movie, rather she was on campus to talk anxiety, depression and “embracing your weird”. At CAB Presents: Lisa Jakub students were invited to an evening of open and honest dialogue about mental health, life and being true to yourself. Touring to discuss her new book, Not Just Me, Jakub entertained students with her story and advice for a happy, healthy life.

#3 Epic Bingo

Never has a game of Rock-Paper-Scissors meant so much. With prizes on the line at Epic Bingo you can be sure that the competitors were dialed-in on the best strategy to break a tie. With televisions, tablets and tons of other great prizes up for grabs, the three Epic Bingo nights on campus were absolute can’t -miss events. Winners in the fall semester went home with tons of great prizes just by playing a free game of bingo. Epic Bingo will be back this fall, so get your dabbers ready!

#2 Panda Game

For years the Panda Game has been circled on Ottawa sports calendars as a must attend event and this years game did not disappoint! The highest attended Panda Game in 49 years saw the Ravens down the Gee-Gees in a thrilling victory in front of a sellout crowd of 24,420. With their playoff hopes on the line in double-overtime rookie quarterback Micahel Arruda scrambled into the end zone from six yards out bringing the Carleton faithful rushing onto the field in victory.

#1 Fall Orientation Concert

Outside of the historic Panda Game there may not be a more memorable or talked about annual event on campus than the Fall Orientation Concert. This year, the organizers landed a massive headliner when they announced that Juno Award winners Mariana’s Trench would headline the fall concert. Winners of numerous MMVAs Josh Ramsey and his Vancouver based pop punk band rocked campus under the stars offering students a rare opportunity to see the Canadian rockers in an intimate setting far removed from their typical arena shows.

As we wrap up the fall semester we can’t help but look ahead to winter 2018, SOAR! and the numerous events that will take place throughout the next semester. Have a safe and happy holiday season, we can’t wait to see everyone back on campus in January.
