1. What was the most memorable moment of your Carleton experience?

In the Criminology and Criminal Justice Program, I had the opportunity to apply for field placement. In my third year I worked in a law firm with a sole practitioner. This was the most memorable year for me at Carleton, as I had the chance to combine my studies with practical experience in a field where I would like to start my career after graduation. I was able to work with legal documents in the office, speak in court before a judge, and network with lawyers in the courthouse to learn more about their experiences in the field.

2. Which service centers were instrumental to your success as a student?

The Centre for Student Academic Support (CSAS) was instrumental to my success as a student. The support staff at Writing Services helped me to excel in my written assignments. Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) were instrumental in helping me prepare for mid-terms and final exams. Skill Development Workshops allowed me to use resources to enhance my time management skills, battle procrastination, and learn more about goal setting.

3. Which community member has made a difference in your time here at Carleton?

My work supervisors at Carleton have made a difference in undergraduate experience. In my positions at the Student Experience Office and with the Bounce Back program, my direct supervisors were mentors in my life. They challenged me to not only produce creative and innovative projects at work, but they challenged me to be the best version of myself. They ensured that I maintained a healthy balance with extra-curricular activities, studies, and self-care.

4. What achievement or experience are you most proud of from your years here?

The experience I am most proud of is completing my undergraduate thesis project. To date, it is the longest research paper and process I have been through. It was a difficult project to work on in my final year, while applying to law school, working, and studying. However, my supervisor, Dr. Lara Karaian, pushed me to produce an excellent project and polish my research and writing skills.

5. What advice would you give to a new Carleton student?

My experience at Carleton was a huge learning curve for me when learning how to maintain a healthy balance of my commitments. For new Carleton students, I would suggest developing a decision making model or a set of values that they can use to help filter the commitments that are most important to them. This will help students to choose the activities that they are most passionate about and it will help them avoid overcommitting. Nevertheless, I would highly encourage new students to get involved outside of classes to develop new skills, meet new people, and further explore their interests.
