Carleton University has introduced Safe Trade Zones on campus to provide students, staff and community members with a safer environment for completing online marketplace transactions.

Safe Trade Zones are designated, clearly marked public locations where individuals can exchange property and payment related to online purchases and sales. The spaces are located in well-lit, high-traffic areas equipped with constant video surveillance, offering a secure alternative to meeting in isolated parking lots, private residences or other secluded locations.

The initiative is intended to help reduce crimes commonly associated with online marketplace activity, including robbery, theft and fraud.

Carleton University’s Safe Trade Zones demonstrate a proactive approach to community safety and awareness of the risks associated with online buying and selling platforms. The designated areas will provide a convenient and accessible location for individuals to meet while reducing the need to share personal addresses or attend private residences.

Two Safe Trade Zone locations are being introduced on campus:

  • Pigiarvik (ᐱᒋᐊᕐᕕᒃ) – The secondary lobby adjacent to Campus Safety Services. Vehicles may also use the loading zone directly outside the building for brief transactions of up to five minutes.
  • Teraanga Commons – Seating area located on the second level between the Teraanga Reception Desk and Fenn Lounge.

Each location will feature clear “Safe Trade Zone” signage, including a disclaimer outlining the program’s purpose and limitations.
