Are you planning on registering for a French course this fall?
All students interested in taking French courses at Carleton University are required to take an online French Language Placement Test when they register for the first time.
The test is available online and can be taken at any time. However, students are advised to take the French language placement test before their registration timeticket opens up, as you’ll need your test results to be able to enroll in French courses.
Who needs to take the test?
Anyone planning on taking a French course (FREN) at Carleton for the first time, regardless of whether you’re majoring in French or if you have any prior knowledge of French.
When should you take the test?
You need to take the placement test before registering for a French course at Carleton for the first time. Please note that you will not be able to register for any FREN courses until you have completed the test.
Why do you need to take the test?
The online French language placement test will establish your level of proficiency in French. Your test score will then determine which courses you’re eligible to register for in Carleton Central.
What does the test involve?
- The first step is a self-assessment questionnaire, which you need to fill out as accurately and honestly as possible.
- The second step is a series of grammar exercises of increasing difficulty. Please complete this step to the best of your ability.
Please note: To ensure that you are enrolled in courses that match your French language level, your oral French proficiency will also be assessed during the first week of classes, in-person, by your professor. Based on your results, you will either stay in the level you were assigned to by the online placement test or the instructor will recommend another course.
