Sexual Assault Awareness Week 2021

At Carleton University, January 25 to 29, 2021, is Sexual Assault Awareness Week! The Department of Equity and Inclusive Communities, along with campus and community partners will be hosting a variety of events and workshops for you to attend virtually throughout the week!

The events include:

Monday, January 25

  • You can register to receive a package of self-care essentials mailed right to your door! Fill out the Google form to register.
  • Trauma-Informed Yoga Series – there is a pre-recorded yoga series created by Warrior Yoga. Each of these videos explores different themes you can watch virtually at your own leisure!

Tuesday, January 26

  • Traditional Medicine Workshops with Joseph Pitawanakwa, hosted by the Centre for Indigenous Initiatives from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m., email to register!
  • Keynote Speaker titled “Stories Spark Change: An evening with Chanel Miller, hosted by Eternity Martis.”

Ryerson, Wilfrid Laurier and Carleton University are proud to present noteworthy keynote speakers that features two prominent voices on campus life, sexual violence, and experiences that racialized survivors in the institutions that we are a part of.

Speaker Bios:

  • Chanel Miller: Best-selling author of her critically acclaimed memoir “Know My Name”
  • Eternity Martis: award-winning Toronto-based journalist and editor whose bestselling debut memoir “They Said This Would Be Fun: Race, Campus Life, and Growing Up” is featured on must-read book lists including Now magazine, Popsugar, BlogTO and many more!

Keynote Event Details:

  1. Tickets are FREE for Ryerson, Wilfrid Laurier and Carleton University students, staff and faculty!
  2. Registration is required, there is limited space for this powerful event so make sure you register today to reserve your spot! The event will be hosted via Zoom, and it will feature an opening by student survivors, followed by Chanel and Eternity’s discussion.

Wednesday, January 27

  • Support groups for survivors will be hosted from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. These support groups will be facilitated by the Sexual Assault Support Centre of Ottawa. You can register by email for an 8-week program for survivors of sexual violence to share and find support in the community!

Thursday, January 28

  • The Womxn’s Centre is hosting a Bystander Intervention Training Workshop from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. The goal of this workshop is to leave with concrete actions and language that can be used in real time to de-escalate and prevent harmful behaviours while supporting survivors.
  • Don’t miss out and join us for our Netflix Watch Party screening the feminist classic ‘Clueless’ from 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.! There will be a chance to win gift card prizes with fun trivia throughout the movie.
