The Carleton University Senate has approved the use of flexible, compassionate grading options for undergraduate students in the Fall 2020 and Winter 2021 terms. Specifically, Senate has approved that unsatisfactory (UNS) grades will replace any Fail (F) grade for the Fall 2020 and Winter 2021 terms. Senate has also approved the optional conversion of one (1) 0.5 credit grade to Satisfactory (SAT), for the Fall 2020 term only; extending this measure to the Winter 2021 term may be considered at a later time. SAT/UNS grades are not used in the calculation of CGPA, which means that changes in academic performance due to the current disruption will not affect students’ permanent records.
Please see details below. We have also set up a SAT/UNS FAQ webpage that covers a variety of questions and information relating to SAT/UNS. We encourage you to carefully review this webpage prior to making your decision to designate one of your Fall 2020 term 0.5 credit grades as SAT.
How do I request SAT/UNS?
You will not need to request an UNS grade. With the exception of failing grades assigned as a result of an academic integrity violation, Fail (F) grades will automatically be converted to UNS by the Registrar’s Office for Fall 2020 and Winter 2021 term courses.
Once your final Fall 2020 term 0.5 credit grades appear in Carleton Central, you will be able to request to designate one of these passing grades as SAT. Information regarding this process will be provided to students later this month. We strongly encourage you to wait until all of your fall term grades have been posted before making this request. Once the change has been made, it cannot be reversed.
How can I determine if I should ask for a SAT grade?
You are encouraged to use the Hypothetical Course(s) and Grade(s) option in your Academic Audit to determine how opting for SAT in one of your courses instead of a letter grade will impact your progress in your program, your CGPA and your graduation eligibility. If you have additional questions regarding the SAT/UNS designation, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org to meet with an academic advisor virtually.
Meeting Minimum Prerequisite Requirements
If you chose to request a 0.5 credit grade be designated as SAT, you will still be required to meet the minimum prerequisite grades for future courses, regardless of whether the grade has been replaced by the alternative notation. The original letter grade will remain accessible to the University for internal purposes only, but will not appear on your transcript.
Undergraduate Scholarships and Deans’ Honour List Awards
Information about how SAT/UNS will affect the renewal of entrance scholarships, general in-course scholarships and the Deans’ Honour Lists is available on the Awards Office website.
Wishing you all the best as we complete the fall term,
Vice-President (Students and Enrolment) and University Registrar
