As an institution that is expanding its EDI and Indigenous initiatives, Carleton University would like to take this moment to recognize and celebrate members in our community who are Indigenous or identify as 2SLGBTQ+ – or who are members of both groups – during National Pride and Indigenous Peoples’ Month. Carleton is pleased to establish the Equity and Inclusive Communities Advisory Group comprised of external members of the community as well as our own faculty, staff and students. We are also proud to have recently released Kinàmàgawin (Learning Together), a report which calls for structural changes including consolidating all Indigenous student services through a new Centre for Indigenous Initiatives. This is the beginning of the work we all need to do to help right the wrongs of our nation’s past.
You are invited to take a moment to observe Indigenous Peoples Day on Sunday, June 21, 2020, and to take a moment to read about Canada’s own Pride history. Given the current global discussions about racism, it is a perfect time to think about what each of us can do to renew our efforts to promote conciliation with Indigenous peoples and foster greater inclusivity within our diverse community in this extraordinary time.
