A new phone scam in Ontario has been targeting international students. Early the week, the Peterborough Examiner reported that potential victims are receiving a call that claims Canadian law requires them to pay a $2,500 “Welcome to Canada Tax.” In these calls, individuals posing as a city police officer are threatening to immediately arrest international students if they do not make the payment through a bitcoin machine.
If you are unsure of a situation, or have any questions please contact the International Student Services Office (ISSO) in person in room 128 UC, by phone at 613-520-6600, or by email at email@example.com.
