Update #4 – Presidential Search Update

Monday, September 11, 2017

To All Members of the Carleton Community,

With the start of the school year, it is timely to provide the university community with an update on the work of the Presidential Search Committee which began in the spring.

The search committee composition was announced and includes the following members.

The Executive Committee of the Board of Governors established a group to review responses to the request for proposals (RFP) seeking an executive search firm to assist with the search. The review group included Chris Carruthers, Bob Wener, Ken Evans, Elinor Sloan and Rob Thomas.

Through the RFP process, the firm Perrett Laver was selected to conduct the search on behalf of the committee. Perrett Laver is an executive search firm that advises on leadership searches for educational, research, health care, non-profit and cultural organizations in 50 countries.

The search committee held its first meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2017. A representative from Perrett Laver attended. At this first meeting, the committee emphasized the search must be driven by meaningful consultations and supported with a communications program. A Presidential Search Website has been developed to assist with communication: https://carleton.ca/presidential-search/.

The search process will continue into 2018. Next steps focus on requesting input from students, faculty, staff and alumni on the attributes and skills desired in the next president and vice-chancellor to address the issues the university is facing over the next five to 10 years. To provide your input on these questions click here. If you choose, you can make your submission anonymous.

A public input meeting will be held in early October 2017 in addition to various consultations led by the search consultant. Details about the time and location for this meeting will be announced. Committee members will also be reaching out to different constituencies on campus for input.

The presidential search process is a community effort and a top priority for the Board. Our committee welcomes your input and encourages your participation in future consultations. With your ideas, we can help shape the beginning of Carleton’s next 75 years.

I look forward to updating members of the community throughout the process.

Dr. Chris Carruthers
Chair of the Board of Governors
